A Study in Scarlet is the first Holmes book, where we meet the odd detective and his companion, the good doctor. For those of you who don't know, Watson narrates all of the mysteries. The book was very fun to read, short at just 104pgs, yet long enough to really flesh out the details that needed it. When a double murder is discovered in London the police turn to their aid, Sherlock Holmes, to find the real culprit. But was it murder or justified revenge?
The Sign of The Four is the second novel. In the first page we learn of Holmes' addiction to both cocaine and morphine. When a beautiful young woman shows up, begging Sherlock's help in unraveling the mystery of her father's disappearance 10 years prior Holmes is certain is is a simple case. But stolen treasure, unbreakable oaths and perhaps a touch of true love spice up the mystery.

After you read the Holmes books, you MUST read The Beekeeper's Apprentice by Laurie R. King. If you like it, there are about 5 or 6 other books in that series.

He's like the precursor to CSI....and House, come to think of it...
He's got the detective ability of the modern crime units and the biting sarcasm (and addictive personality) of my favorite crippled doctor...

OH I loved those stories! My Gigi gave me a HUGE collection of leather bound classics, and those were the first I read. Now I am going to have to put aside Tolstoy and dig those out again.

I agree totally with Chris. You really do need to read the Beekeeper's Apprentice.
