The Ability to Make Change

I would like to take a minute of your time, faithful reader, to make a proposition to you. Take a moment and look around you. Don't rush, please take your time. Now take a moment and look at your life.

If I may, I will share what I see with you.

Looking around me I see a bedroom filled with books and pictures, with posters of Pre-Raphaelite paintings, piles of yarn and a fishtank with three adorable fish swimming lazily around. I see a cat curled up at the foot of my bed, sleeping peacefully in the safe home we've given her. I can hear my sister sleeping nearby, snoring softly and mumbling in her sleep.

Looking at my life, I see a sadness because I won't be going away to school like the rest of my friends, but I know that I'll draw strength from that sadness and use it to get through this year. I see a life full of hope and prospects and opportunities. I see only open doors.

If your view is like mine, perhaps made better with children or a signifigant other to share the days with, then I'd like you to do something.

Go to your yarn stash. Reach in and pull out that yarn you've been saving for a project. You know the yarn I'm talking about, the yarn you bought on a whim, not knowing why but knowing that you just had to have it. Maybe it's expensive alpaca or wool or maybe it's acrylic. Pull it out now and grab a pair of 10 and a half needles.

Cast on a scarf. Work in a 2x2 or 3x3 rib. Or do something more complicated, but make sure that it's functional and warm.

When you're finished up I want you to donate it to a charity for needy people. Children, adults, anyone. Winter is coming and things like scarves and hats will be needed by people who don't live the lives you and I do. If you have a blog, post about the experience. About the process.

It may seem so small when you look at it. Just a scarf really. But to the person who will recieve it, it may mean all the world.
